India laptop, tablet shipping reaches $ 100 billion by 2025: ICEA report

The report revealed that the global market for laptops and tablet products is expected to be around $ 220 billion a year over the next five years by 2025. In India, the market size is estimated to remain at about $ 7 billion over the same period.

The export of tablets and laptops to India, fueled by various government programs such as PLI, is expected to hit $ 100 billion by 2026, the India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA) said in a statement.

In its report entitled “Aatmanirbhar Bharat India’s turning point – An agenda for manufacturing laptops and tablets for India and the world 2021-26 $ 100 bn opportunities” ICEA said the global e-commerce market was estimated at $ 2.1 trillion.

The report revealed that the global market for laptops and tablet products is expected to be around $ 220 billion a year over the next five years by 2025. In India, the market size is estimated to remain at about $ 7 billion over the same period.

Imports of laptops in India have increased by 42% from $ 2.97 billion to $ 4.21 billion in value over the past five years. 87% of these imports continued to come from China. The report notes that overall, India’s confidence in China is very high and that it has risen from $ 2.83 billion to $ 3.65 billion over the past five years. For the year ending March 2021, the import of laptops to India is estimated to be worth about $ 5 billion while imports from China are $ 4.35 billion.

On average, the global market for laptops, tablets and desktop computers has grown from $ 229.38 billion in 2018 to $ 240.99 billion in 2019. It is expected to stabilize about $ 220 billion by 2025. Only 6 international players make 89% of the shipping market laptops and 81% of tablets. The United States and the EU together represent more than 40% of the global market.

Global manufacturing facilities are limited to a few countries where China is the world’s largest supplier of 66% from 2019 with a value of $ 100 billion. This indicates that there is a huge gap in policy interventions to start producing laptops and tablets in India’s domestic and global markets, the report said.

According to the report, appropriate grants focused on the export-oriented production of laptops and tablets should be provided. This will help eradicate the disabled between China and Vietnam and encourage industry stakeholders to establish production facilities in India. It would be useful to achieve ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ globally and reduce dependence on China.

“For India to benefit the world and gain a large share of the global market will give us a production value of US $ 100 billion by 2025. It will also create 5 lakh jobs and foreign exchange revenue of US $ 75 billion; and an investment of more than US $ 1 billion. At the same time, it will oppose the importation of products towards China which leads to a reduction in trade prices and greater confidence, ”said Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, ICEA at the event.
