The traditional Indian PC market including desktops, textbooks, and workspaces delivered a strong quarter with 9.2% year-on-year growth in the third quarter of 2020 between July and September.
The Indian personal computer market has hit a new milestone in the third quarter of 2020 by shipping 3.4 million PC units. This has been the largest quarter in the last seven years, said research and analytics company IDC in its latest report.
The traditional Indian PC market that includes desks, notebooks, and workspaces brings a strong quarter of 9.2% year-on-year growth for the third year of 2020 between July and September, the report added. its largest with approximately two million shipments. The PC commercial segment reported 41.7% annual growth of 167.2% from the previous quarter.
The report also revealed that there has been an increase in demand for consumer notebooks especially in big cities as schools and colleges continue to operate almost. In addition to the supply problem, PC vendors were able to keep stock of upcoming events online.
What else? The report said that while Q3 2020 remained the strongest quarter for a long time, the fourth quarter of the year between October and December is expected to continue this momentum and introduce a strong growth path for now.
In terms of the commercial PC component, businesses have continued to invest in PCs under business planning continuously to manage their remote operational needs. However, the volume dropped this quarter compared to the second quarter of the year. This has led to a slight growth of 3.1% annually in the general business sector.
Speaking in detail, the report noted that the delivery of notebooks grew by a strong 70.1% year-on-year as businesses opted for more than desktops. Small and medium-sized businesses resumed purchasing after taking a short break, as business operations began in many areas with relative ease of locking limits. Exports of this category grew by 5.5% annually in the third quarter of 3Q20.
Coming to the top PC vendors in India, HP, Lenovo, Dell, Acer and Asus remain the top five vendors in India. HP Inc retained the highest position in the entire PC market with a share of 28.2% at 3Q 2020. It recorded a strong quarter in both consumer and retail segments with a 16.6% increase in exports compared to the same period last year. It has also remained a leader in the consumer segment. However, its market share dropped to 24.2% in 3Q 2020 from 28.2% in 2Q 2020.
Lenovo, on the other hand, was ahead of Dell, who was in third place, with a share of 21.7% in total exports. It confirmed YoY 27% growth in the consumer category and 46.2% growth in its SMB exports. Overall, Lenovo’s shipment dropped by 16.9% YoY.
Dell, as mentioned earlier, stood in third place, with a share of 21.3% in the overall PC market as its exports grew by 18.2% YoY in 3Q 2020. It saw an increase in YoY by 74.6% of its exports. Similarly, Acer retained fourth place with a market share of 9.5% in 3Q 2020. However, it recorded a 12.4% decline in total exports. It continued to dominate the commercial desktop segment with a share of 27.1% in 3Q 2020. Finally, Asus finished fifth. It registered YoY growth by 55.4% in its total PC deployment.
