Saachi Bahl’s new book My Classic Closet discusses culture, identity and extremist ideas from the fashion lens

The author and businessman talk about the importance of what we choose to wear and highlight a unique feature in Saahra’s upcoming e-boutique.

Most of us would agree to spend many hours deciding what to wear, but why we choose to wear it is a serious disadvantage. The thought came to Saachi Bahl’s mind as he began to explore the conversations about culture and identity. The founder of Saahra, a multi-talented fashion designer platform, has decided to make this a focal point for his new book. Published by Juggernaut India, My Classic Closet explores his idea that fashion is an important element of identity building. “The book began with a process of finding out why people wear what they wear and how fashion is important in building identity and superstition. By amassing a diverse experience and ideas from people of all walks of life, this book goes from more than just a journey in search of answers to organizations plagued by the complexities of today’s problems. It promotes and challenges ideas about sex, beauty, religion and race through superstition, ”he told Vogue.

Bahl approached it as an essay, bringing together thoughtful leaders from various walks of life. “It was a unique opportunity to get professional feedback on what we usually see, but we probably never wondered. It was interesting to ask Sri Sri Ravi Shankar why religious leaders adorn empty garments. Anita Dongre underscores why it is culturally acceptable for women to wear trousers rather than men to wear skirts or lehengas. Jewelry designer Farah Khan Ali shared why historically wedding rings are worn to symbolize a lifelong commitment. ”The list goes on to include handwritten accounts from other professionals, including director Shashank Khaitan, who is hosting a public workshop to make films. Meanwhile Chef Kelvin Chueng explains that the number of folders in a torque container represents the number of ways a chef can cook an egg. Through the many questions raised by this book, it hopes to find answers that people often face when choosing their costume, often influenced by social, religious, and cultural norms.

Bahl’s journey in fashion has come to the fore as a fashion designer, turning to business, creating an environment driven by purpose, value and positive impact. Four years ago, he launched the Saahra retailer with the idea of building India’s first domestic label platform that meets global standards of sustainability, fair trade and cruelty, such as Akaaro, Ekà and Doodlage. As the fashion scene changes online, the Sahara e-commerce platform launches this month with the first phase of its kind dedicated to transparency in India. The aim is to obtain labels that will disclose as much information as possible about the arts, materials, procurement and other such details regarding the manufacture of the product. The website will also provide details of whether the product or product has been certified by an agency or company.

“Over the past few years, greater awareness has shown and created a dramatic shift in perspective. Today, in India, many designers redefine traditional Indian art and textiles to recreate the modern language of painting in order to attract the vast majority of consumers. This in turn creates stability in the craft community and crafts, ”he believes.

Bahl is one of the most promising voices using their platform to separate ideas and share experiences. “You don’t have to follow fashion to read this book. I intended it to be a thoughtful, simple meal, ”he emphasized.
