Dubai: The UAE Gender Balance Council has announced the winners of the third edition of the Gender Balance Index.
His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Governor of Dubai, congratulated the winners and praised the outstanding contributions of women in the Emirati to the development and stability of the UAE over the past 50 years. Her rise emphasized that the equal participation of women is one of the pillars on which the nation is based, and continues to be a force for good through law reform, ongoing policy making, and strong institutions working to advance women’s role in building the future of the UAE.
The third edition of the federal federal’s Gender Balance Index categorizes the winners into four categories: Best Personality Supporting Gender Balance, Best Federal Organization Supporting Gender Balance, Best Initiative Supporting Gender Balance, and a new category, Best Banking and Financial Sector Institution Supporting Gender Balance.
UAE: An inspiring success story
Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Gender Balance Council, said: “Since the establishment of the UAE, women have been supported by basic laws and programs that promote gender equality.”
He also pointed out that the gender balance agenda is a national priority, and that the UAE has made significant progress in the short term to ensure that women and men are empowered, given equal opportunities to participate in the national development process and achieve success. Highness expressed her pride in the country’s top position in international gender equality reports, adding that the achievements were made possible by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the unwavering support of Her Highness Sheikh Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairman of the General Women’s Union (GWU). of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and the Executive Chair of the Family Development Fund (FDF).
The Best Person
The first section of the index honors people who have played a key role in achieving gender equality in their institutions. These people have led efforts to promote gender equality and ensure that their institutions contribute to making the country a model for gender equality in the region and globally.
His Excellency Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Presidential Affairs, has been named the winner in this category for his tireless efforts to provide women with a positive and supportive work environment in the Department of Presidential Affairs.
Leading State Organization
The second section of the index identifies a leading organizational movement that supports gender equality. The assessments in this category are based on national indicators in three areas of focus: decision making, education and experience, and the workplace.
The Department of Energy and Infrastructure was nominated as the winner in this category at the ministerial level while the Federal Demographic Council won the award at the agency / establishment level.
Leading Banking and Financial Sector Center
The third edition of the Gender Balance Index includes a new category for Best Banking and Financial Sector Institution Supporting Gender Balance. Twelve banking and financial institutions have been selected in the UAE. Standard Chartered Bank was nominated as the winner in this category after the bank achieved the highest rating in five evaluation processes: supporting indicators of global stability in the gender balance sector; recognizing the institution’s vision by promoting a universal culture of gender equality; using gender equality to empower workers; to ensure balance in providing services to customers; and the management of gender equality.
The chief executive of Standard Chartered Bank in the UAE, Rola Abu Minneh, is an Emirati banker with more than 25 years of experience in banking and finance, and the first Emirati woman to manage a bank in the UAE. In the course of her professional career, Rola Abu Minneh strives for women’s entrepreneurship and empowerment. In her first year with the Bank, Rola was included in Arabian Business’ ‘World’s Most Powerful Arabs in 2019′ list, as well as Forbes Magazine’s 2020’s’ Middle East’s 100 Power Businesswomen ‘.
The Best Initiative Supporting Gender Balance Award recognizes best practices, projects, policies, and laws that promote and support gender equality at the national level. The Department of Health and Safety has won this award in this category in honor of its decision to incorporate cervical cancer vaccines (HPV) into the National Immunization Program. The vaccine is given in two doses for 13- and 14-year-old schoolgirls in grade 8.
This step is the first and most important step in preventing this type of cancer in women and girls and saving their entire lives. Cervical cancer is considered to be the leading cause of death for a quarter of a million women worldwide and half a million women get it every year. The Department of Health and Prevention initiative will contribute to reducing the number of deaths due to cervical cancer.
Over the past few years, the UAE Gender Balance Council has launched various programs and projects to promote gender equality in the country and to achieve greater success and global leadership, in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The Council, headed by Her Highness Sheikh Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, works with key partners, including government and the private sector to reducing the gender gap in all sectors. The Council has worked closely with international institutions and world leaders to promote the gender equality agenda and continues to adapt to using global best practices to ensure that the UAE is a model for regional and international gender equality. The efforts of the UAE Gender Balance Council are in line with the UAE 2021 Vision, and the UAE Centennial 2071.
