WASHINGTON, Aug 29 – U.S. Representative Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republicans who joined a congressional investigation into the attack on the Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump, accused members of his party of “hypocrisy” for defending the former president’s handling of classified documents.
“The hypocrisy of people on my side who have spent years chanting ‘lock her up about Hillary Clinton because of some deleted emails or server wipe quotes are now defending a man who didn’t care about the national security of the United States. States to the heart,” Kinzinger said during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
On Friday, the Justice Department released a redacted version of the affidavit that helped it get court approval for the FBI’s Aug. 8 search of Trump’s Florida property. The affidavit revealed that law enforcement is investigating possible criminal activity, including obstruction of justice after classified documents were found there and others have already been returned to Washington.
Trump says he has done nothing wrong and is the victim of a political attack.
For years, Trump and many other Republicans have criticized their 2016 campaign rival, former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, for using a private email server for some official public communications, some of which contained classified information.
Trump regularly leads political rallies with supporters chanting “Lock her up.”
Kinzinger and Rep. Liz Cheney are two Republicans on a nine-member House special committee investigating the deadly attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and Trump’s activities around that day.
Kinzinger, who has decided not to seek re-election, said either in upcoming hearings or in a formal committee report, “more depth” of Trump’s behavior during the unrest will be revealed. He added: “One of the most interesting things will be the funding part … the vast majority of this money has been raised under ‘stop the theft’ with no intention of doing anything to stop the so-called theft.”
Trump is falsely claiming that Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election thanks to massive fraud, a claim that has been rejected by multiple court decisions, the president’s own former Justice Department, and even statewide Republican-led investigations.
