Giuliani is the newest member of a growing circle of Trump supporters, colleagues and family members to be infected with the deadly virus.
Rudolph Giuliani, Donald Trump’s personal attorney, became a brand new member of the US presidential inner circle to go down with Covid-19.
President Trump has revealed Giuliani’s infection in a tweet that he was “tested for the Chinese virus”, using a description of the pathogen he used to protect him in any case. Giuliani is leading a presidential and legal effort to challenge his election defeat to Joe Biden.
President Trump has indicated that those efforts will remain unaffected by Giuliani’s infection, saying “we will continue”.
Giuliani is 76 years old, overweight and has survived a men’s prostate cancer, which combined to put him at a high risk of developing severe Covid-19 symptoms. The former New York City mayor, formerly known as U.S. mayor for leading the city’s response to the terrorist attacks on 9/11, is being treated at a Washington DC hospital.
In a possible backlash against the outgoing president, attorney general William Barr reportedly estimates his departure from power before the end of Trump’s term. A man of integrity and aggression, he summoned the president’s wrath recently by announcing that his department had found no evidence of widespread electoral fraud, disputing Trump’s allegations that he had been robbed a second time.
In the meantime, President Joe Biden has reportedly named California California Attorney General Xavier Becerra as Secretary of Health and Human Services (DHS), which will lead the fight for the Biden and Covid1-9 administration.
Trump and his legal team have dismissed baseless allegations of electoral fraud and irregularities that have been thrown out by the courts in all six states where the president was defeated in a White House battle. They are now trying to persuade the Republican legislatures in those provinces to reject the result, using the technology of the electoral college system.
Giuliani is the newest member of the ever-expanding circle of Trump aides, colleagues and members of his family to be infected with the deadly virus, partly because of their refusal to comply with common social isolation practices.
President Trump himself became infected and was hospitalized on Covid-19 a few days after the first presidential debate in October. Melania Trump, the first wife, and their son Barron Trump followed soon. As did Trump’s eldest son Don Trump Jr., Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien, and Trump campaign officials Bill Stepien and David Bossie (assigned by Trump to lead his legal efforts ahead of Giuliani).
The United States has been hit hard by the epidemic with more than 14 million diseases and the death of 282,000 people and President Trump’s mistreatment of a major public health crisis – he has strongly denied the allegations and said he has responded adequately – and subsequent economic damage could cost him a second term.
